The hole that was left by Zjeena leaving seemed as hollow as ever weeks after the cream mare said her good byes and left the islands. Now that Monster had healed from giving birth, she only had more time on her hands to come to terms with the fact that she was gone and never coming back. It wasn't getting any easier, either. She felt the losses of all the horses she'd ever reached out to, those she had actually found a kinship with, those she actually considered friends. They were few and far between, but thought of no less by the painted mare. She had her children and she had Rougaru and the rest of the herd, but who else would she lose?

She found herself pacing by the shore line, trying to clear her head. Fall came to a close and she didn't let Rougaru touch her this time, but had a feeling he would understand after her last hard birth. She would perhaps give him more children in the future, but her body needed time to heal first, as well as her mind. Alpha was a different breed as a foal. Headstrong and feral, he was a colt of little words and big actions. She had more scars on her sides and legs from his teeth than from any of her spars or war battles. No amount of scolding or disciplining was working on him either. If anything, he continued to get worse, like it was a challenge he looked forward to.

She was at a loss for what to do about him, so she let him get his space when he ran off. Did that make her a bad mother? She wondered, but only briefly. Her heart still ached for Medusa and to know how her oldest was doing. She told herself she would venture to the Inlet again soon to see if there'd been any word. Now that she was strong enough, she could burn through all the islands until she found her daughter, if that was what was necessary. She even thought about venturing to the Crossing, just to see what kind of trouble she could get into. It would be a nice reminder for Rougaru of their early days, when she lived to irritate him. Not that her heart would really be in it, though. She missed Zjeena.
