First Breath After A Coma

I would honestly love you now,
But I would lovingly let you down.

Jabari settled in at a comfortable distance from her, his pink lips tearing at the wet blades with half-interest. But the activity seemed to satisfy his longing - he felt the creep of anxiety at the back of his brain begin to lift, even if it was only temporary. He breathed a heavy sigh, the sides of his barrel rising and falling in one long motion. He snorted then, cocking a hind ankle as he gingerly picked at the offerings.

Of course, his blue-eyed gaze flitted frequently to his new nameless grazing companion. From closer range, Jabari could discern just how young she really was. She was bright-eyed and curious, but her body maturity gave it away. It was during one of these brief inspections that he caught her shivering in the rain, and dared to move a bit closer. She too, seemed interested enough to help close the gap between them. Until finally, Jabari watched as the young mare extended her muzzle to his.

He stopped mid-chew, to raise his head apprehensively. His eyes fell into hers before accepting her offer, and slowly pressing his damp chin to hers. Jabari's nostrils flared as he breathed her in, in the humid air. Even with the dilution from the rain, he could smell it. Paradise. Jabari's jaws clenched, if only for a second, and his wet brown tail swiped up against his haunches. Nevertheless, he nickered lowly to her, still appreciative of the company, even if he was now second guessing his decision to wander over at all.

"It's a beautiful night, isn't it?" He offered casually. Thunder still rumbled overhead, but it was a distant cry now, rolling out with the grey clouds over the sea. He looked up at the stars that were burning brightly in the storm's aftermath. A chestnut ear lobe twitched as he caught the growing volume of the insects' song humming from the grass and the trees.
