As her soft brown eyes returned to his face, she noticed changes wrought by their quiet interlude only a moment ago. Where unease and wariness had once creased wrinkles into his handsome brown, now the aftermath of pain tugged it into a new shape. Liquid trembled on his lower lashes, noticeable only because it had not been there a moment ago, and a soft frown tugged the corners of her lips down. Had she done something to upset him? It was one thing if he had taken offense at her presence all on his own, and something else entirely if she had done something to perturb him.

Her aristocratic head tilted slightly in quizzical interest, but she said nothing at first, opting to listen before forging ahead with the question on the tip of her tongue. His query made her chuckle and she made a noncommittal sort of movement accompanied by a quirk of her brow. "I don't think so," she said, her gaze tearing reluctantly away from his face to peer at the sky again. "There's too many trees to see.... But that star, there," she said with a point of her muzzle toward the bright northern star, "I remember that one."

Quiet falls between them then, and she lingers there for a moment, eyes upturned and the faintest trace of a smile on her mottled lips. When the silence had stretched gone on long enough, she turns back to him and stretches as if to brush her muzzle along his cheekbone only to hold back mere centimeters from his skin. Pulling back far enough that she could try to meet his gaze again, she questioned him softly with no judgment in her voice. "Do the stars always make you cry?"
