ori

The roan mare seemed only slightly taken aback before she greeted Ori politely. There was warmth in her voice, and in the slow smile that tugged at her lips, that Ori enjoyed very much, and he smiled at her in return. Her eyes seemed to drink him in, which brought a flush to his cheeks; although he couldn’t rightfully say a thing about it, as he was doing the same to her.

Finally she gave him an answer, and Ori actually realized how long they had been standing there in silence. He was embarrassed, but he tried to hide it. He realized she didn’t seem embarrassed at all, which made him like her even more. She stepped toward him as she spoke, and it took some conscious thought not to either step back out of respect, or forward to meet her. He kept his hooves firmly planted, determined not to get in over his head. Unbeknownst to Ori, it was too late for that.

“It’s just… I’ve never been here before,” he admitted with a chuckle. “And it seems I came at an inconvenient time. Winter is just about here.” He gestured with his chiseled head toward the leaves that littered the ground, before sending a few of them fluttering into the air with one hoof. He had always liked this time of year; as a child, he would play with his siblings in the leaves, and had never actually dropped the habit of throwing them around whenever he had the chance. He might have been embarrassed by this, but he had seen the mischief in the roan mare’s eyes, and he suspected she might even indulge him if he asked her to participate.

What is it ye’d like to know, handsome? she asked, and Ori even ducked his head bashfully. What did he want to know? He knew nothing about this place; where to even begin?

“I could start with your name, if you’d be so kind,” he said, a playful smile warming his face without his realizing. His blue eyes glittered with mischief to match hers.
