Calfuray
sing to me in the dark

The Prairie had been beginning to feel like maybe one day, it could be home. But then one of the mares had died bringing her foal into the world, and not long after that, the mare’s son came looking for her. Calfuray had watched from a small, safe distance. Isla had been kind, made her feel welcome, but the truth was, she still felt guilty, and angry, and sad. And the bittersweet loss of the loss of the mare & the survival of the newborn served as a kind of wake-up call. Running away wouldn’t fix anything. What if… What if she stayed here, another season, another week, another day. What if, like the boy who’d come looking for his mother - she returned to the Peak in search of Kolfinna, only to find that her mother and brother had gone?

What if something happened to her family, and Calfuray never got to see them again.

When she woke one day and realised that Isla herself had left for other shores, Calfuray decided that she had to go home too. It just… Took her a little longer to work up the courage, and work through her hesitation. What would she say - how could she explain why she’d left without a word, and hidden herself away. She imagined her mother would be so disappointed. And Kalanthia - well, she’d be angry. (‘After everything, how could you do that to Kolfinna? And for what? To go looking for the boy we met once on the mountain when we were little? And he wasn’t even there, Calfuray!’)

When it came to it, Calfuray had found courage enough to leave the Prairie, courage enough to return to the Peak. But the valley where her mother had dwelt as long as the greying palomino mare had known, stood empty, with no sign of her mother, or brother, or sisters, nor even the faintest trace of their scent. She stood there, a lonely little figure shadowed by the mountain. A ghost, grey as the clouds of dawn.

She didn’t linger long. Doubted anyone would recognise her. She was a far cry from the bold-spirited golden filly she’d once been, a mere handful of years ago. Drifted south, feeling very much at a loss as to where to go. She knew there was a good chance her mother had returned to Tinuvel, as she’d always wanted to. Something had always held her back, and Calfuray had never been able to figure out what.

It came as easy as breathing to discern what it was that led her south, to the heart of the Crossing, instead of north, to the sea. Kolfinna had always been more concerned about everyone else. About Kalanthia, and Faline, and Saul. But Calfuray? She’d been the one Kolfinna had always relied upon. The one Kolfinna had left behind, when she’d taken Kalanthia to meet her family in the Cove.

Calfuray… Calfuray had never known any family, aside from Kolfinna, Saul and her sisters. And the truth of this still left her with a bitter taste in her mouth. They were all scattered to the wind, now, she mused as she wandered through the Falls and beyond. Blinked her dark eyes when they prickled with the threat of tears. In time, she’d make her way to Tinuvel, but right now… She didn’t want to be alone exactly. But… After holding onto the past for so long, maybe it was time to let go. All that time, nursing her hurt feelings… She’d been young and foolish, resented her mother and been envious of her siblings.

Since the moment she’d left the Peak all that time ago, she’d been beholden to no-one. Had kept herself apart for too long in the Prairie. What she wanted - a family, a sense of belonging - she’d had that all along, but she’d allowed that to crumble down around her. But it was not lost to her entirely. All she had to do was start again. And maybe then she’d be able to face her mother without being burdened by the shame that felt as constant as her shadow.
