In the case of the vegetative elderly patient I was describing above, I spoke briefly with the nurses who were shuttling him from room-to-room. Quietly and respectfully, they described his “quality of life” and “prospects for recovery” as ZERO. As for DNR, they said he had no relatives or guardians with the authority to pull his food tubes.
