i dream in phosphorescence

𖤓

Helios had been up before dawn that day, leaving the cool darkness of the caves to the west to trek along the borders and check them for any other signs of invasion. It was something he did twice a day now. A few days ago, Starlight had gone on her own to give birth to their first child. Though the stallion's gut told him not to leave her alone, Helios acquiesced and left her to check on his other mares. In that brief period of isolation, Starlight had been stolen by a stranger from the Badlands. Ever his thoughts turned to the painted mare and their child, who should have been spending their first days here in the Dunes.

Though he had tried to keep a cool head, Helios acted rashly and had unsuccessfully attempted to steal one of the stranger's mares as well. In doing so, he'd learned the painted male's name: Raegar. The creamy length of tail lashed harshly against his deep golden flanks. Something else the paint's appearance had taught him was that he'd gotten too complacent. In these first few seasons of his reign, the flaxen chestnut should have been getting to know his neighbors, perhaps gotten on well enough terms to consider alliances. Instead here he was, heart aching for those who were taken and raging at the cause of their absence.

The call that came to his ears was soft and bright, yet familiar. A piece of his heart hoped desperately that it was Starlight having been allowed to come home. Trying to dampen that thought, that folly hope, Helios eagerly dashed toward its source anyway. When he crested the last of the dunes separating him from the visitor, the chestnut had to clamp his lips shut to keep from crying out his dashed hopes. He was not unhappy to see Nashira. Surprised, yes. Her visits had lessened of late after all. That couldn't be helped though; it must have been hard for her to return since the departure of her family members.

Helios dipped his head in a greeting to Al-Hilal. It was not often that he saw the black male who served as his second. Perhaps that must be something he could endeavor to change as well. "Good to see you, Al-Hilal. I trust you and your band are doing well?" Once the black stallion responded, Helios would turn his attention back to the sabino mare and offer her a smile. “Nashira. You're looking well! I'm sure Niyat would love to see you while you're here.”
