This FAQ deals with better moderating your message board. If you have people spamming your boards, shooting off "blanks", or just want a more controled
message board, the best thing to do is enable registered users. You can do this by following these simple steps:
- Login to the admin area (do this from our main page).
- Click on "Set Options" link on the right side of the page.
- Check the box next to "Only Registered Users May Post".
- Scroll to the bottom and click "Save". (if you checked the highlight new posts, you will have to set a color and save again)
Now all your users will have to register before they can post. This is good enough to stop the spam robots out there, but how about if you want more control?
This is where the fun begins ;). You will notice a link that says "Registered Users" on the menu to your right. Click it. This is the page where you will be able
to oversee the people who have registered for your board. The registration proccess takes place on your board. Once you have enabled this feature, a new link will
appear on the menu on your message board and it will require all your users to register before they can post.
On this page, you will notice a "End Registration" button. If you press this button, it will not allow users to register themselves on the board. Only
you will have the authority to issue a username and password to post on your board. Why would you want to do this? There are a few reasons. Let's say
that there are a few individuals getting out of control. You have removed their username and password from the list, but they keep registering new names
because they have no lives and want to disrupt your message board as much as possible. In the event this happens, you should press the "End Registration" button.
What this does is remove the registration link form your message board. The only way to add new users would be from this page (right below the end registration button).
Some message boards just choose to end registration right away and have users register via email. To do this, you can add your email to the header section of your
message board. Then when people want to join your discussion, they can just email you and you may set up an account for them. When you want to let users register themselves
once again, all you have to do is come back to the "Registered Users" page, and the "End Registration" button will now say "Allow Registration". Simple as that.
You can also delete users you do not want and be able to retrive passwords from this area.
What is "Security Word" under the Spam Control feature?
If you enable this, every time a user wants to post, they have to type in a string of characters displayed as an image. This is another option to employ if you
have spam bots spamming on your board. It effectively stops the spamming. I suggest using the registered users feature because once the user comes and logs in,
they can just post as they wish. No typing in uneccessary information, just posting :).
This concludes this lesson. :P
