there are things in life you learn

In a single smooth movement Arthur got to his feet once more, before turning and taking a few steps towards the back of the room where a store cupboard was built into the wall. He pulled the ring of keys from its place in his belt and located the one which fitted the lock on the wooden door he was facing. He slipped it into the lock and turned it before pulling it open. Leaning forwards the King’s head disappeared from view for a few moments, but soon he had straightened up, a bottle of red wine and two silver goblets in his hand. It was only then that he locked the door once more. He returned to where Epos was sitting on the bench, slipping the cork free of the neck of the bottle as he did so (a method of wine storage he was not too familiar with, but one which he had grown to like considerably) and by the time he had settled beside her once more, he had already filled one of the goblets with the rich red liquid. The young King handed it to his companion, his rough weathered hands brushing against her smoother ones, before sitting back casually and pouring some wine for himself. “Cheers,” Arthur smiled, raising his glass in Epos’ direction a warm smile on his square features, “here’s to good company,” he continued lightly knocking his goblet against hers.

Her next question brought a smile to his lips, realising at that moment that given his previous comment, which had been nothing more than a throw away joke. Arthur had never actually needed to sit down and explain who he was to anyone. His mother had just known, and everyone else who knew had learned through osmosis. It was Lilith who had seen the most of who Arthur was, but he had never told her everything. There were many things he kept to himself, things of which he was not proud and which he would rather forget. “This body isn’t old,” he explained, the glint in his silver eyes giving away his pleasure at this, “but I’ve lived and died before. I wasn’t always a fairy.” The boy sighed, a nostalgic smile on his face, “I probably sound more than a little unhinged, bear with me” he requested with a short, low laugh. “I was a human on earth a long time ago, a King, and I remember everything about that life, I always have, even when I was small.” He was unsure of how familiar Epos was with the stories which circulated about him, the stories which got so much wrong, but which managed to retain some details he wished that they didn’t. He was wary too of sounding as if he was bragging, if he told Epos directly and she did know about him, though from what he had seen of her, she did not seem judgmental. “King Arthur isn’t just a Shaman title.”
