Nikola had been leading the way. He'd turned his head now and then to make sure they were still behind them. The last time he'd tossed his head over his shoulder, the two foals were stuck to their mother's side. He went on without realizing what had happened in his wake. Somehow, sometime between his last peek and when his hooves stepped up onto the sandy shores of the Rainy Ridge, Balderdash had been lost to the waves.

In his ignorance he had shook off and turned to welcome the trio into his home. The words stuck in his throat when he saw the panic in her eyes. One.. two.. Someone was missing. When she screamed out at the rolling waves, he dove right back in without reservation. What had been the foal's name? He racked his memory as he cried out over the waves, fighting back through the way he came, searching frantically for a flash of his spotted coat, the tiniest cry that would lead him to him. Nothing. Nothing above the splashing of water being kicked up by his trashing legs. Balderdash. The name stung his memory and it came out in a concerned yell, his voice on the edge of frantic. Was this how it felt to be a parent? He could hardly stake claim on any foal in this point of his life but he certainly didn't want to see any child die. On his watch no doubt.

His heart seized as he screamed out again, lips pulled back as he cried out over the waves.

He did not give up until the muscles of his legs had began to cramp and he was forced back to the shore. Head hanging heavy, voice raspy and throat squeezing closed tightly from all the screaming, Nikola slumped, defeated and heavy-hearted. "I'm sorry.." he rasped, not daring move too close to the no doubt grieving mother. He blamed himself, so why shouldn't she?
