stuck in her daydream

Isoke and her daughter turn automatically when a resounding whinny reaches their ears, coming from behind them in the thicket of trees from which they had emerged into the drizzle. A small smile reaches the mare’s lips when she sees that Morgan, too, is soaked to the bone, looking positively miserable and almost as coal-black in color as Isoke herself. She ignores her friend’s wry quip and the stab of irritation it gives her, instead stepping forward to playfully tug at the tall grulla mare’s slick wet mane with her teeth. Brienne, meanwhile, is quiet as usual, with only a smile on her pale, crooked features and her short, silky little tail wagging like a puppy’s.

When Isoke pulls away, her expression is different as she searches her friend’s familiar face. She knows Morgan all too well, and it’s not difficult for her to sense that she might easily turn into a foul mood today. The miserable weather no doubt isn’t helping, of course, but it’s been raining almost nonstop for days now. If I wait for it to stop in order to do this, I might be waiting until next year. Still, Isoke feels another stab of appreciation for her friend and the fact that she is still here, despite obviously not enjoying a minute of it. Would that she had the parts to make her a stallion! How much easier our lives would be then, she thinks to herself with bemusement, all too late remembering that Nikola is her stallion now, and that she had let him take her in the heat of the moment. I might well be carrying his child. I must fight for this.

She sighs, as if preparing herself. “You know what I’m going to ask,” she murmurs, looking up into the other mare’s eyes with an innocent, hopeful expression as Brienne stands beside her and calmly watches the exchange between the two adults. The grey sea is crashing behind them as the storm continues to roll in, but it doesn’t rattle Isoke’s nerves. She is prepared for this, for all of it. “You don’t have to answer right away, but… I think you should at least see who you would be keeping company with. It would be good for you.” Her voice is soft, a pre-emptive measure taken to hopefully soothe whatever qualms her friend might be feeling at that moment. “Brienne misses her auntie.” The girl in question says nothing and does nothing but watch Morgan with blue eyes wide and honest.
