 bay blanketed mare of the dunes Being a part of a herd was not one of Jezibelle’s strongest traits. Since her arrival in the Dunes, she had spent nearly all of her time wandering away from the other mares and being alone. She wasn’t used to company and over the past two or three seasons she had been inundated with almost more than she was willing to handle. Wandering too far from the oases in summer would have been stupid, but now that winter was well underway the sun was not so oppressive and the sandy heat not as invasive. She was free to travel where she would within the territory.
Jezibelle wandered far that day. Her first impression of the Dunes had been hasty, her harsh judgement of the land unwarranted once the sun set and her lover rose and rose and rose until all the land seemed to glow from his light. Sometimes only half of him showed and other times it was as if he struggled to lift his great weight above the rolling line of the horizon. Some nights he did not appear at all, but the nights were still not dark. The Dunes seemed bright to her at all times. The hefty draft mare halted atop a low, windblown dune and looked out over the land. There was a dark, uneven shape a few dunes away which might have been an oasis judging by the tall shadows poking up and the warm scent of water the wind brought her. But there was also the smell of Badr. Her dark eyes swept the sands until she found his reclining form illuminated by the sun, and she strode toward him. Sand kicked up from her hooves was gusted away from her by the calm breeze, and when she neared the stallion she lifted her feet a bit higher to avoid even accidentally kicking any of the fine grains at his face. "You did not tell me I could see the moon under my feet, here," she greeted him. |
