Mess work that was. And for what?

Vesti looked back at her nursing colt. He seemed to know what he was doing. That was good - for the new mother certainly didn't. The labor itself had been simple. She had followed the instructions hard-coded into her very being. There had, of course, been a battle of will between her better judgement and her instincts. A compromise had been found, and so she was in the smaller oasis. After the colt had been pushed free of her, she had cleaned it. She knew it was hers, but she was unsure of what to do with it.

The colt had been shaky when he stood. He had fallen into the sand several times. He had whined pathetically about it too. Still, some instinct told the mother that the colt needed to stand on his own. So, she had simply called to him. Encouraged him as best she knew. She even nuzzled the wet chestnut. Eventually, it seemed to work as he had managed to get his spindly legs under him and took his first steps.

Promptly, he had found her. It had been exciting! Vesti had a connection with something different. She was rather flattered. Then his head had crept about and he found his first meal. Vesti determined that he was smarter than she. Maybe even than she could be. It was a strange thing.

Now, the night had settled in and the quiet of the Dunes was only broken by the gentle sounds of the colt nursing. It was in this moment, when Vesti's mind finally seemed to catch up with the rest of her. She looked at the colt, perfectly content to fill his belly. She looked at the lines of the little, still wet creature. He had a small patch of white on his nose, but he was a chestnut - looking much like his mother. He was alive, he was no dream or hallucination.

He had come from her!

Vesti realized that she had no idea what to do from here! Those months of uncomfortable wanderings, sleepless nights, and expanding stomach had lead to him. Now... now she had more than her own well being to look after. Now he was here. He needed her. What was going on? She couldn't be a mother - she didn't know how! She had lost her own long ago.

She heard a small burp. She turned her eyes from her wild imaginings and met the big, sleepy eyes of the colt. There was a little milk dripping from his lips. He looked so sweet. She could not help the smile that spring to her face. She reached back to nuzzle his head - closing her eyes as she did so breathing him in.

In that moment, she knew only one thing. She loved this creature.

He completely stole her heart.
