The Gods contend in vain

"Once, when the desert was vast and covered all the earth, the heat was intense. But Aşk looked upon the world and frowned, for She was not displeased but sad that under the gazes of her eyes no creatures frolicked. Savaş, her son, sought to please her and put his likeness upon the wind-whipped sands, and for a time Aşk was pleased."

El Aran exhaled and a long, low moan flowed between her lips. She lay in the hot sands of the Desert, legs curled beneath her body as contractions rippled through her barrel and down to her flanks. The black mare kept her ears lifted, dark eyes straining to see everything at once. She paused both in story-telling and pushing and simply lay in the sand for a moment, breathing slow, deep breaths. She shifted, and her sweat-soaked coat collected pale sand. Her sides itched, and she ignored them as movement under her belly called her focus back to her prayer.

"But the children of Savaş were proud and as hot-hearted as the very sands they stood upon. They turned on the children of the other Gods, and when there was no one left they turned on each other. Aşk’s daughter, Aldatma, sought to gain her mother’s favor by introducing creatures of her own likeness to counter her brother’s aggressive spawn. At first, Aşk was pleased. But they, too, over time, turned on each other. And when the children of Savaş and Aldatma discovered one another, their ferocity toward anyone unlike themselves increased tenfold."

Her breath came in short pants and she tossed her head, shaking her mane away from her damp neck. The seer had chosen a spot not too far from the oasis: she would need water after this ordeal. The fluids and afterbirth would remain in the sands to be covered by the wind and the elements.

"Savaş’s sons and Aldatma’s daughters fought and fought under the burning sun until the herds were scattered and few. Aşk watched and said nothing, neither to praise nor condemn her children for their actions, but She wept. And from her tears were born creatures made of the purest bloodlines, creatures who claimed no kinship with strife or lies but with love alone. And from their loins sprang a child who coaxed grass from the dry, cracked earth with every step of her hooves, who brought water to the surface with one pass of her tongue and bid rain fall from the skies with her echoing laughter. Sükunet’s joy flooded the earth. And the vast desert shrank and shrank until it covered but a portion of the world, and—"

El Aran gave one final push and lay gasping for breath before she turned to tear the birth sac away from her child’s face. The foal inside was dark and wet and scrawny, as all newborns were, and the desert mare ran her tongue over its face and neck to clean it. Only once the foal’s head was clean and the birth sac bunched by the foal's knees did she climb to her feet.

"And Aşk’s children came to her in fury as their children were swallowed by the sea. But Our Mother would not be moved. ‘These are your siblings,’ said She with a grand toss of her nose. ‘You will love them as I love them, and protect them as if they are your own. This is my will.’ Savaş and Aldatma bowed their heads and accepted Aşk’s wisdom. For in the face of Aşk, the Gods contend in vain."

The black mare shook herself, dislodging the sand that clung to the underside of her barrel, and glanced back to check the progress of her child. Once the foal was on its feet she would step forward and cross the Desert to take shelter in the Oasis.
