The yellow orb up in the sky felt warm, unlike the cold wet ground below. It had only just turned spring, so the time for all the snow to finally melt would take a while. Flowers and grass would soon sprout, and every forest animal would finally have something better to eat than the dead grasses. Everything seemed to be looking up now, but for some it had taken a turn for the worst. Whether it was the cold or the birth, a black mare lay stretched out in a small clearing, the small trickling sound of a stream ran close by, the ice having already melted there. It hadn't been to long since the mare had been dead, perhaps half an hour?

But the time she had left allowed her to clean and nurse the two small bundles that still lay curled against her side. One was of ebony, and the other a bay. One boy, and one girl. At least they had a small chance of surviving now with food in their belly, but the effects of such a difficult birth not only punished the old mother but her children as well. When a bird chirps up above in the trees, a small black face looks up, one brown orb looking up, while the other remains still, a milky film can almost be seen covering the young boys eye. His jaw opens and closes in amazement at the blue birdie, until his sibling stirs beside him.

Looking over her, he noticed that she was slightly smaller than him, which was not uncommon with twins. She would need the most help to carry on. Nudging her with his nose, a squeak like noise escapes him, encouraging her to get up with him. The bay filly blinked at her brother and opened her own maw to respond back, but only air came from her lungs. Her brows furrowed at this, and she tried again. Same result, nothing but air. With a silent cry, her mouth opened wide, she staggered to cold shaky legs. She couldn't speak. Hanging her head, she buried it into the stiffening body of their mother.

Unsure of his sisters dilemma, the black colt simply puts his head over her small shoulders, nose rubbing circles on her belly, the skin stretched tight over small ribs. He wasn't sure what they were going to do now.
