falling from grace on silver wings

She stood quietly at the edge of the small gathering, her bright, bird-like eyes shifting from body to body as she waited patiently for some sort of response from the gathered herd - good or bad, she would then have something to do with herself. Although quiet and gentle by nature, the dark-skinned woman had little use for idleness and laziness, preferring to wander and absorb as much of the world around her as she possibly could hope to.

She shifted uneasily beneath the intense gaze of the stallion, noting his flattened ears as she rolled her weight back into her haunches, preparing to take flight at the first indication that he intended to drive her away from his family. He had every right, she was just another mouth to feed, so to speak, but she hadn't ever encountered a stallion that thought too seriously about running off a perspective new addition to his herd, provided of course that it was of the female variety. She smiled weakly at Serenity's whinny of greeting, shifting her weight once again with indecision, but her hooves remained planted firmly in place and her lips tightly sealed. In her homeland, she would have known exactly what to do - an outstretched muzzle, a quiet exchange of breaths, perhaps a squeal or two, and she would have settled down to grazing among the other mares - but here, things were entirely different. That much she had gathered in her travels of these strange islands.

The dark mare's eyes strayed from the larger horses for a moment to follow the thin, young body of the quiet bay filly. An impression of sadness marked itself in the brown mare's mind as the filly quickly disappeared into the trees. She wasn't sure what it was, but she felt a hollow of pity forming in her chest at the filly's dejected, almost frustrated appearance. How very strange this land was indeed, that children would wander with no mother and their father pays them so little attention. How very strange indeed.

Turning her attention back to the group, the dark mare notices the strangely colored mare's intense gaze and wonders briefly if she had trouble with her vision, or something of the sort, for the brown mare had never had such attention bestowed on her small, yet remarkably average body before - unless of course it was by a predator, which she had unfortunately been party to before.

All of these actions had heretofore passed in relative silence, save for the soft whisking of the mare's tail over hindquarters occasionally, or the faint rustle of leaves beneath her hooves as she shifted her weight. But now, with a hesitant intake of breath, she shuffled slightly closer to the group and her small, bird-like voice broke the silence.

"I don't mean to intrude, sir, I have only been looking for a place to call home. I met Serenity in your forest when I first landed ashore here, earlier in the spring... I have gone over the islands many times since, but something has kept drawing me back here." She finished her small speech with another weak smile and abruptly dropped her gaze to her hooves, ears flicking backward in a small measure of embarrassment at her awkward outburst.
