I AM MADE OF SALT AND BONE

Wind, rain, thick clouds of steam, the thrumming of the jungle: All this was Maji's life now. She had been here for some months now, roving like a lost phantom through the humid, dripping world of the Paradise. She had never been to this particular jungle before that first day that she had washed up on it's shors, but it was so much like her birth home that she felt like she had lived there all her life. She fit into it's sweet earthiness like she had always been there.

It wasn't the ocean, that silver creature would always be her true home, but it was a close second. You can not live in the ocean, or Maji probably would have tried. But being near it, taking frequent swims, that was enough. And the rain forest was the closest you could come to living in the water, and Maji was a creature of the water, no doubt about it.

Her existence there, however, was a strange one, barely an existence at all. She had no connections, no place in the herd that also made it's home there in Maji's jungle. She did not even know how many other horses there were, let alone who they were. The only ones she knew of were Rade and the filly who had first approached her, and she had seen neither of them since that first day. Maji avoided the scent of others, flitted through shadows and pools, leaving her scent behind but barely there herself. She was hardly even a presence. She wasn't even sure if she was remembered by those first two she had met, if they even recalled the lanky brown mare with her white splashed markings who had been born by the sea and deposited at there door step. She didn't really care if they did.

At the moment, the painted mare was on the outskirts of the jungle, near the beach. Her body was half submerged in shadow as she delicately lipped a leafe. She was feeling very mellow that day as she stood with one hip cocked, feeling a creeper brush her side like the jungle caressing her.

She lifted her muzzle, pink nostrils flaring wide as she took a deep breath of muggy air - and nearly choked on the strong musk of stallion coming here way. The scent was strong and clearly close, and when she tipped her ears forward she heard the sounds of a body moving through the thick greenery. Her neck shot up, shoulders tencing as she contemplated the many posable outcomes of this encounter. The smell was unmistakably Rade's, it was all over the island and she could pick it out with ease, and he had no love for her. But he was too close for her to run, but Maji did not want to run.

Her stance relaxed again as she made the desision to meet him, and when the golden stud appeared out of the mist before her, Maji met him with a blank, blue eyed stare. She had nothing to say to him, so she just looked on. Perhaps he would try and drive her off (he had never actually excepted her into the herd) perhaps not. It made no difference to her. Maji had the ocean on her side.
