The male became in motion and to the mare’s fears it was towards her. She knew better than to try and run, with a blind child it would have been pointless. Ears tilting back to lay against her poll she jutted her nose out nastily, a warning in every sense of the word. Keeping herself between him and her child she was wary of what she should do. The press of his muzzle, the feel of his teeth caused a squeal to tear free of her lips. Muscles tensing, her hind legs pushed her up in a half buck yet she did not kick out at him, it had been just another warning.
Turning the direction his presence and persistence pointed her, the mare did not move any faster than she wished despite the nipping at her heels. With her grey child’s fearful body pressed against her shoulder now she had no intentions of rushing her any faster than a walk. Keeping her head tilted so a glaring blue eye could remain on the stallion, her ears remained pinned in warning if he was to push any harder. When it came to her daughter the mother would not be trifled with.
Stepping out into the opening, the mare’s eyes came upon the slighter mare. Instinct made her move towards the other female even if the stallion had not been driving her knowing that most mares would not hurt a child. The yearling’s nostrils flared as she sucked in gulping breaths, fear causing her skin to dampen around her neck and flank. Coming to stand just a few lengths away from the blanketed woman, the mare turned halfway so that her side was now facing the stallion and blocking him completely from the young girl. Ears remaining pinned, her eyes never left him but she still heard the other mare’s words.
