Smoke rings in the dark

Days had come and gone and Wynne had grown accustom to the new stallion and his demands. It was simple really, to keep to the areas he took them and not to wander too far. The mare never pushed him, always compliant with his wishes so long as he did not bother her afterwards or the blind daughter at her side. But today was different. During a nap she had taken when the stallion had made his way off to do whatever it was that he did, Ash had slipped away from her side. How it was the girl had done so successfully without being spotted by another herd member was beyond her, but regardless the pregnant mother was upset.

Head raised, Wynne looked through the towering trees that surrounded her hoping to spot the movement of a greying young body. Instead it was a brief flash of tan that caught her attention. The stallion had returned only to walk a wide circuit around them. Did he not notice the missing member within them? Not yet trusting him, Wynne did not want to let him look for the girl on his own. Had he realized she was blind yet? And if he did, would he do something about it? The threat of the stallion finding the girl before her caused a faint flare of unexpected temper to rise before quickly extinguishing. She could not blame him for something he had not done.

With a snort and a shake of her head, Wynne set off in the direction of the faded scent of Ash without speaking a word to the other mares. Maybe if she hurried she would be able to find the girl, but by the fading smell of her daughter it had been quite a while since the girl had disappeared.
