Years? What were you thinking, Vesti? The Voice asked. You couldn’t have mentioned how long you lived on Salem. In fact, you shouldn’t have… Vesti pinned her ears against the Voice’s taunting. It was the thing’s idea to come out here anyway. She knew there was a black mare that had claimed this oasis — which was why she had started here. She’d always avoided the black mare, but knowing she was there made Vesti’s isolation a little less true. She could walk out at any time. Which is what she was doing.

She loosed an ear at the buskin in front of her.

“Yes years,” Vesti stated as she settled into a pace behind him. “The Dunes was my preferred sanctuary at one point. Then the hills. But the hills have been empty for quite some time. Almost like everyone vanished into the sea.” She didn’t know why she was chatty to Orhan; it was likely more for herself.

As they approached Vesti again had her confidence shaken. She was a crazy mare, at her core. One who had only known fear. She privately gulped. You did this to yourself. The Voice stated. Vesti crossed into the greenery and looked about. The water hole was bright and inviting, but there was the Black.

She crossed forward and took a long drink. Not too fast, not too slow. She had long learned the lessons of the desert. She kept an eye on the Black mare. She’d smelled her many times and had almost come out to meet her before. Vesti, though, was tightly bound by her fears. She looked back at Orhan attempting to decide if this was a trap. She wasn’t leaving Salem, regardless of what the other did.

There was a tense moment before Vesti moved to take a position in the shade. She was not relaxed, but not necessarily on guard. Cautious would be the appropriate word. However, she was not going to reject further company. So, what now? Stand off until one makes a move?
