Ro bounded a short distance from Birch in the wake of Denahi's excitable departure, whiskers and long neck extended as if he could sense the dog's direction. The creature chittered cheerfully at Flynn at his mock rebuke, obviously not discouraged in the least. He flopped upside down, little feet kicking as he waited impatiently for his new best friend's return.

"At least they'll sleep good tonight," Birch said with amusement. She couldn't help but hide the very slight relief that filled her at that prospect, unable to count how many times the otter had woken her up at the very crack of dawn for a wrestling match or to beg for breakfast.

As Denahi bounded back down the hall, Ro's favorite item clenched between his teeth, the otter chittered excitedly and danced a wiggly, less-than-graceful dance around him. He was sorely tempted to pounce on the ball the second the dog released it, but since Denahi was being patient enough to take a few steps backwards, Ro thought he ought to be good as well. Ro's body ducked into a playbow, his little rump wiggling in the air.

"Ready... Set... GOGOGOGOGOGO!" Ro pounced on the ball, hitting its backend and sending it rushing away from them. He circled Flynn and Birch, bouncing excitedly, as he waited for Denahi to catch it and bring it back.

Birch's eyes lit up, a husky laugh escaping as she pictured the scenes Flynn described. Meeting a familiar had been the least of their surprises their first night in Shaman, but she could see how startling it would be when one didn't expect it. After all, her own first encounter with her familiar had been rather interesting; he'd appeared on what had been one of her most discouraging days, deciding that she desperately needed not only him, but his playfulness. And he'd been right, though she'd never admit it aloud.

"We met Sperantia our first day here, along with her deity," Birch shook her head a little at that memory, a faint smile on her face. As grateful as she was towards Mallos for saving her charge's life, she couldn't help but feel a bit dismayed at the idea she was indebted to the deity. "It was an interesting start to our time here, that's for sure."

Birch laughed again, louder and more fully this time, at Flynn's comment about the twins. She'd never really thought about it from that perspective, but she could see how it might be disturbing to picture a ten-year-old with needles and another with a sword, even if they were both talented youngsters.

"I could see how that might be a bit unsettling," Birch said, nodding in agreement. "Especially with their passion for gore." Recalling Danny's half-hour lectures on the various wounds he'd seen, how they were treated, and in which ways they could go terribly awry was enough to make even a battle-hardened warrior like Birch feel a bit nauseous at times. And Dylan, well, if there weren't heads being chopped off or great wars being waged, he wasn't interested.

"He'd love that," Birch agreed with a nod. "He's always complaining we don't ever leave the cabin unless it's for work or battle." She snorted at that, her opinion on that particular comment obvious. "Just let us know when you guys are free, and we'll make it work."

Birch's smile grew softer; it was not pitying, but sympathetic. Torram was older than the boys, and had had a firm foundation before their arrival, but there were times when worries over his future, over his happiness, had kept her up at night. She clapped him on the shoulder, warrior to warrior.

"I think that's our plight as surrogates, to worry we're never good enough," she admitted, her voice a little rough as if she struggled a bit with the admission. "But we're lucky, I think, to have such good boys to work with."

She paused then, considering for a moment. "I can put some feelers out, if you wanted? See if he's around. I know it wouldn't be easy for you to get information, given your position, but I might have better luck." Trying to lighten the mood, she grinned and pointed to her scar. "I've even got the perfect excuse to wear an eyepatch."
