 “Don’t worry about it,” Grai said as she wondered if she was the reason for another stallion to go wandering off. “Look, I’mma let you in on a little secret about stallions: We tend to wander anyway. Chances are that he was just getting bored or got word of a family thing. I would be very surprised if you were the reason he upped and left… if he upped and left at all. Maybe he just moved islands since you last saw this… Jabberwocky.” He shrugged. Why had he felt the need to say that? Simple, his father had up and left when he’d been a yearling. He’d up and left many times… but he’d never left a mare.
Freya really shouldn’t take a stallion’s meanderings personally. “Now, if Jabberwocky were more than a casual friend… well, that’d be a different story,” Grai realized he probably shouldn’t have said something like that. But she said that she’d met him the same time as Dogun, so chances were they weren’t more than acquaintances. Still, assuming was a bad thing to do. It got equines killed. Then she turned the question. Grai looked away a bit. His parents. “No, it’s not too personal,” Grai said. “I can’t really answer as I don’t know. My father up and left without warning one day when I was a yearling. I left my mother when I hit two. For all I know, she’s still on Salem. She wouldn’t leave unless something made her… and personally —” Grai looked up at Freya. “If something made her leave, I’d be very frightened.” He shrugged. “I dropped by Salem to check on her when I first got back… but the Hills are gone and she wasn’t in the Dunes. I wasn’t going to scour the Island for her anyway.
