SPEECH The path was well known to Grai. His ears swiveled a bit, eyes glancing around. He’d left this boarder a few weeks ago. But he still wasn’t going to be caught off guard again. The wolf pack had been routed, but they might be coming back.

“Yeah, been a bit busy…” Grai sighed. He looked back at his scar. “The scar and the absence are pretty interrelated actually. Wolf bite.” The wolves on the Crossing had never been this aggressive. At least, in his experience. He looked at Dogun. Surely the other stallion had known about the wolves.

“The wolves out here are way worse than on the Crossing,” Grai admitted. “I happened on a pretty big pack a few weeks ago. They were pretty far down the mountain. I haven’t seen that many before — or that aggressive.” He shook his head.

“Yeah… got a little too close trying to drive them off and one of the dogs got behind me. Thankfully, he missed. His friend… not quite as bad aim.” He looked at his hip. “But that pack’s gone now. I didn’t drive them off on my own… but eventually they got sick of getting spotted and of me driving off deer. I think at least.”

He laughed when Dogun mentioned Soda.

“Yeah, we met up in the Falls a while back,” Grai said. “I honestly didn’t think she’d come out here. Her name’s Soda. Her daughter is the dun. Apparently the dad ran off. The smoky black is her sister. Apparently her parents took off too. Left her with the kid.” Grai sighed a bit. He understood what it meant to take care of a sibling. “Seems like the herd’s been doing well though.” His nerves were still on edge. But he was starting to relax a bit.
