gather medicine for heartache

incomplete without you

I will not lead you astray. Trust me. As she followed Dögun from the forest, these words echoed through the white mare's thoughts. The small stallion had never attempted to prise Silver's past from her, and she had kept these secrets clutched to her chest, afraid to expose her heart again. Though they had lived together for two seasons, Silver realized, she was still just a stranger to Dögun. He didn't know her, but had given her his friendship and his trust all the same.

Suddenly, she wanted nothing more than to deserve this trust. "Dögun..." Silver said as the trees began to thin, her voice as soft as the whisper of the wind. "Did I ever tell you how I came to be at the Falls that day?"

And then, without pause, Silver began to share her story.

"I was raised by humans, trained alongside other foals who had been taken from their mothers at a young age. Cavalry, they called us, and when each of us was grown, we were paired with a soldier. It was our duty to protect this human - to serve as his mount, and fight beside him. The man I was given to was called Greyson." Silver's voice caught, and for a moment she was overwhelmed by sorrow. But the ache of her heart was more bearable in Dögun's presence, and soon she was able to continue.

"In a lot of ways, Dögun, you remind me of Greyson. He was brave and good, and willing to fight until his final breath to protect those in need. So when a group of our soldiers were wounded in battle, he could not bear the thought of leaving them to die at our foe's hands. We rode off in search of them, but by the time we found them, they were not alone. Greyson was shot by the enemy, and then they slaughtered the wounded who still drew breath.

"I stood at Greyson's side, Dögun, and I watched him die. I would have lain there until I joined him in death - I wanted to. But with his final breath, Greyson told me to go - and so I ran."
A heavy silence followed this proclamation as Silver struggled with the burden of her guilt. She had failed in her duty to protect Greyson. Shaking with repressed sobs, she turned away from the grullo so that he would not see the tears that traced a path down her cheek, gazing out across the vast Bay.
