The ear nearest him turned, pointing to where his voice drifted out in the quiet between them. Shortly to follow was her gaze, drifting and lingering on what she could see of him. With his muzzle at her back she could feel the soft, warm tickle of his breath drift against her skin. “Why?” She asked, voice subdued from her tears which were now dried, leaving only watery and red-rimmed eyes in their wake.
Dock looked forward again, looking to the Forest rather than her current companion. This stallion that was far closer to her than any other than her sisters were. This stallion that was willing to hunt down the one that had harmed her and make him suffer for what he had done. This stallion that would do anything for her and all she had to do was ask. All of this and Dock was not even his priority, not even a number in the crowd of his mares. “I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’m not the best at socializing.” It was said dryly, almost with a touch of humor lingering. “The mere fact that I can talk to you like I am… This all feels like a dream, like it isn’t possible.”
Dock shook her head, feeling as though she was getting off track. Taking a breath and resettling her thoughts, she sighed. “I just… I don’t understand, I guess. I don’t understand why you... Why you’d help me. Of all the other mares – the better ones – out there… Why me?” A part of her hated saying it out loud. It was as if she feared voicing it would bring Valentine to the realization that he had better things to do then spend any sort of time with her. As if she would shatter whatever quiet peace she had found with him there.
