gather medicine for heartache

incomplete without you

The Inlet had changed since Silver had left it three seasons ago. Tinuvel had always been a cold and desolate place, but it was a different kind of emptiness that greeted her on the rocky shore the day she'd returned - the absence of its grullo leader. Dögun was the one who had welcomed the white mare when she'd first arrived in the Inlet two years ago, and from that moment forth it had been her home. And though Silver always shied away from the depth of her feelings for the small stallion, she couldn't deny that she was always been happiest when sharing his company. He was like a little sun - chasing away the shadows of her sorrow, and warming her from within. If Silver had ever believed there was something stable in the ever-shifting sea of her life, it was her friendship with the Pony King.

And as she'd stared down the empty beach, she was certain that it had reached its end.

She'd stumbled often as she searched the shoreline for Dögun, blinking away the tears that blurred her vision. And then he had come - a black stallion who smelled of sand and salt, herding Freya and another mare Silver didn't recognize towards the shore. She'd stood her ground as the trio pounded towards her, lunging for the thick-boned brute when slowed, his his dark upper lip curling as he caught the scent of her heat. Her blunt teeth snapped shut inches from his skin, but it hadn't been enough to deter him from mounting her while both women looked on. And, as broken as she was, Silver had submitted without further fight.

At least, until he'd attempted to shepherd her into the sea as well.

She was fortunate. The dark stallion had his figurative hands full with the two younger women, and was not willing to risk losing one or both to pursue an older prize. Silver had fled, ignoring the painful protest of her arthritic joints, and the burn of the icy air that filled her lungs. She ran until she literally dropped from weariness, and it was there, curled up in the shelter of a spruce, that Skylar had found her, the tears she had wept freezing to her pale cheeks.

Together they'd located the herd, but Dögun was not among them. In fact, many had been missing - Grai, Soda, the two fillies, and...her son. Only Sigrun provided a familiar face amongst a sea of strangers - and Skylar. The Vulcan mare was kind, and offered to stay with Silver until Dögun returned. It was a small comfort, but the pale mare clung to it desperately. Skylar would keep her safe should the black return, and surely the grullo would return soon, with Bastian at his side.

But when Dögun finally came, the bay colt was nowhere to be seen. Silver's heart sank as she watched him the grullo pony approach - noting the heaviness that seemed to press down upon him, as if he bore the weight of the entire world on his shoulders. Something was wrong, and it was more than just the approaching storm. Was it the loss of Freya and the other mare - or something else? Had something happened to her son? As soon as they found shelter, she was going to find out what weighed on the once-carefree stallion so heavily. And what had happened to her child.

And whether she was still welcome in his home.
