Yes, its 2015, and various entities block you from sites based on your IP address, which of course gives out your location.
CBC does this, and German TV blocks people out of Germany from playing videos on their sites.
At work we block ANYTHING outside of the US from server access for security reasons. Here is the site we use for reference to do so:
https://www.countryipblocks.net/
If you go to that site and try to play the video, it specifically says you are blocked based on location.
