ebb and flow

Not much snow had fallen so far this winter, but the cold had kept it at bay for even the snow wouldn’t fall if it was too cold. The bit of grass he could find here was far from anything grand, he wouldn’t be able to survive here for long it was to rocky, the dirt was different and didn’t seem to support much growth, not for edible plants that he needed anyways. He’d move on today more than likely unless he found something more substantial worth staying for.

But despite his indifference to the dark chestnut tinted mare and the hopes he’d go on unnoticed he didn’t and she of course had to prance on over with her bubbly announcement. He shut his one eye without lifting his head in a “damn” moment. A long breath was let out and he slowly raised his scared head to the mare. Good day she had cheerful called, good day accord to who? It was cold, food was scarce, he had no home or herd, the one he thought he loved and loved him back turned her back on him and he was half blind. He could already tell she was one of those rainbow horses.

He said not a word, but she didn’t seem bothered instead she sparked a new conversation. Stating the obvious, no food here. I noticed. His voice came out hoarse and gritty, with little expression. He did not return her greeting but simply stared at her with his good eye. Taytim was her name, he let loose another long exhale before reluctantly speaking again. If anybody asks you tell them you don’t know. Then returned to pawing at the crunchy snow, ice and rock. Head lowered to find nothing, not even moss at least nothing he could reach through the thick layer of ice.

He knew it was a rude comment, why not just give the poor thing his name? What harm did it do? She was only being friendly, how was she to know he was a grump and didn’t want to have any company much less female company. Any mare at this point reminded him of his Dulce, painfully bringing on memories that he didn’t want.
