it would seem these monsters are men

all I knew were the stories I was told of monsters
and valiant men sworn to slay them.

Abigail’s blue eyes were full of wonder for the difference (and yet small similarities) this terrain held from her home of Paradise. She was a short, stocky thing, most of her coat white with only three spots of blue-black roan: over her poll like a cap, on her left underbelly (which crept up a little on her belly) and right at her rump, leaving most of her tail to be black while the rest was white. Her small stature and hardy build made it easy to climb up paths between rock faces and then down again, trailing along the shoreline of this place known as the Ridge, wondering where she could climb up and perhaps see the edge… wondering what could possibly be at the edge… but that was Abigail, always wondering, always so very curious.

Then, she heard the steady drumbeat of hooves. Abigail stopped her curious exploration and swung her attention toward the direction they’d come, seeing a large, stocky built dark stallion moving toward her. She watched him very, very carefully for signs of aggression, for if she’d seen any she was smart enough to turn about and make like hell for Paradise. Luckily, he appeared sociable, relaxed, and friendly. The closer he came the more she saw the pleasing qualities he carried, like how he was smiling in such a welcoming way. Abigail’s own pink lips turned into a happy smile which stayed as he closed the distance, stopped, and the pair of them shared a few huffs of greeting breaths.

She blinked at his compliment, giggling softly the very moment he’d called her pretty. Abigail wasn’t used to being given such compliments, but it was nice to be treated so kindly. “Exploring!” She replied, her smile bright. “I hope it’s not a bother, I live in Paradise and every time I’ve come up to your border I’ve been so curious what your home must be like. I thought I’d go ahead and just… see for myself!” The smile never wavered, and she paused for just a moment before offering up her name. “I’m Abigail.”

it would seem these monsters are men
and it would seem these men fear their own monsters
