The monster hunts for them; for Jaidah and for Ailith. Throughout the winter he had watched each of them grow larger, swell with his legacy. Soon the puppies would be here and the mothers needed to be strong.
Still healing from the wounds Amoxtli had inflicted, hunting was harder. The beast had resorted to ambush technique to secure the decent sized wolf he now dragged in his jaws. It was not a tactic he particularly enjoyed, it failed to cause the swell of satisfaction that came with tearing a wolf apart while their eyes filled with the terror of what they knew was coming. But he had done it anyways, the monster knew he needed to be strong as well.
He is gone a full day, hunting and then carrying his prize back from the woodlands he had hunted in. The spring air was fresh and clean with the newness of the season the monsters nose able to smell everything the snow had hidden. The faint scent of blood and birthing fluid float from the den he had chosen to bring Ailith to, urging the monster on faster.
Eyes of pale, lifeless lavender begin to scan the area as he draws nearer, ivory ears also perking forward alert waiting for any sound that may indicate and potential threat. If any would be foolish enough to try, any threat to his puppies would be eliminated. Mars takes the time to abandon the carcass near the entrance and make a good size loop around his den , reinforcing the scent markings he’d left to warn off others. Once satisfied the monster returns to his original task;dragging the lifeless tan colored wolf into the den.
Jaidah is tended to first, her tenuous condition far more serious than he had anticipated even with the heavy smell of her blood filling the air. Once he has situated Jaidah the ivory titan turns his attention towards Ailith. Weary of her temper and teeth, Mars approaches slowly. When it appears the white wolf is sleeping the monster does something surprising. With an actual display of gentleness Mars nudges the puppies with his muzzle, appearing to nuzzle and sniff them. Before seemingly doing something that doesn’t seem so out of character.
The largest male pup is suddenly grabbed and hoisted away from it's mother's warm side sending it into a fury of squeals. Mars hold the puppy around the middle in massive jaws, all he would need to do to kill it would be to close his mouth. And for a minute it appears he will. Monstrous jaws flex and squeeze the fat little puppy between life stealing stained daggers. Yet, he doesn’t; the puppy remains uninjured, although angered at being squeezed. The pup is deposited with a nip on the scruff; a nip he also gives to the other male. They will know or he will kill them. He is in charge.
His eyes turn to Ailith, if she has still remained feigning sleep he will whisper to her that she could be great if she would let him help her. Before dragging the wolf carcass closer and taking on his normal tone to show he now required her to wake up and answer him.”What have you named them?”
Into these animals we grew; but when we were young our eyes were blue.
