are the dead really silent?
Her change at mine washes over me as I lower myself to her. I feel at peace when I can feel her fear flow out of her, replaced by comfort and security. At last, I feel as though I could breath. In the seconds I had met her, scared her, I had not realized my breathing had stopped. Air filled me as she had. For this moment all had seemed right in the world. Even the taunting spirits seemed to quiet with this moment of peace.
Solstice padded forward, her rabbit following suit, it still glaring at the woman in suspicion. It was no matter, I cannot change the thoughts of souls and the creature was strange enough as it was. As the two of them played their happiness envelopes me in a warmth strong enough to make the summer heat seem frigid. Each movement the beautiful woman made intensified my daughter’s playful growls. She played and romped, nipping at Psyche. Even though she could not have hurt the older wolf anyway, the pup made sure not to get anywhere near being able to harm the woman. The nature of the pup was kind, no desire to harm anything around her. Giggling, she jumped from Psyche and ran around my large frame. With a yip, jumped once more and ‘tagged’ the rabbit to run with her. Together they circled to the opposite side of me. Two pairs of eyes looked at the woman, waiting for he to give chase.
Attention torn from the pup, my ears flick to Psyche with my gaze quick to follow. “You had done nothing, and I frightened you. I was wrong.”
Her next question surprised me. Could she not see how incredible she was? Did she not know of her own beauty? That she called me worlds and realms away? I search her face intently, fearing I would scare her away again. “You are breathtaking. And you are kind to my daughter.”
