My sister in law has owned a 45 acre horse farm in Southampton, MA for 20+ years. She told me a few years ago a state DEP person knocked at her door and informed her that he was tracking a mountain lion that crossed in the back end of her property. He asked permission to continue his tracking and even showed her the prints with the classic tail drag in the snow. She never heard from the DEP person after that day.
I live in NY and the official NY State line is there are no sustaining populations of mountain lions here. That doesn't mean there aren't a few transient ones. Remember the one killed on a Connecticut highway about 3 years ago? That one was just an hour outside New York City and DNA analysis said it came from the Dakotas...
