This Broken-Down Fantasy

Finally! It had been a long time coming! A life-time, even! Lost in wonder the young mare pulled herself out of the salty water and into the cool air, onto the beach of the island. For a moment, it could have been more, she simply stood in the waves and absorbed the idea that she was here. She did not know where she was, where else she could go, or what dangers she could face here. All she knew was that she had made it. The mare took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and simply revelled in the freedom that she felt had been denied her as a filly. When she reopened her stunning blue eyes the excitement and joy that had been lost in her youth shined through. With a gleeful whinny released into the air she reared onto her hind legs before launching herself forward into a full-bodied gallup.

The spring sun shined down on her body, drying the moisture from her fur. In the sunlight the lines of her proud friesian heritage was impossible to miss. Age had washed away the softness of her structure to reveal a solid body that had spent her three years climbing the mountains of the Peak. Her coat was clean of scars and black as night, marred only by a white snip and a sock on her back right hoof. Those patches and her blue blue eyes where all that declared the splash of her father’s bloodline. Thick hair from her mane and tail flew behind her as she ran, banners declaring her pride while more feathers circled her hooves and sent dirt and grass spraying with every thundering step she took.

There was nothing that could hold her back at this moment. No mother pleading with her to stay, no elder insisting to be cautious. This was the moment her day-dreaming friends and sister had always spoke of that she had never experienced. It felt incredible.

It felt as though she were flying! All of her dreams were coming true and she was one with the fantasies and spirits Taika and Jetta had whispered to her. Adelheid could have sworn she almost heard the voices of the spirits the two others had conversed with. As she ran, the mare was close to tears in pure pleasure at the feelings that filled her being.

One with the shadows of the trees (trees! Different from the sparse spruce she found on the mountains!) and finally started to slow. Broad chest heaved with her breath and she looked around the canopy for the first. It was incredible. All of it. Every part. Every breath.

She was here. She was free.
