Live through this lie

Was I left behind?
Someone tell me, tell me I survived.

I stare long and hard at the stallion standing in front of me. At first glance, he is very much the same speckled friend I remember from our adolescence. But upon further scrutiny, I can see something has changed. He wears his worries heavy on his face and frame. Something is clearly wrong -- and something has been wrong for some time. I nicker eagerly to my friend, knowing somewhat, what that feels like. Maybe there was a greater reason why I hung around the Crossing today. Maybe it was for Nephilim.

A red lobe flicks forward as he speaks. Another swivels forward and back as I register his tale. I remember this period of time when Nephilim was seemingly nowhere to be found. The Bay had emptied. Mum and I hadn't heard from Nova since we'd gotten word she'd shacked up with him. I don't remember if we ever talked about it. I can't recall if I've seen him since we heard Nova ended up there. A certain flurry of concern passed through my chest as I listened. But I tried not to be selfish. He needed somebody right now. But Nova...

"If she was in as bad of shape as you are now, that means she cared for you." I offer, unsure of how much it will help. "And she will be fine. As will you. Life goes on."

I feel uncomfortable offering such generic life advice, but I say it anyway, hoping that perhaps it will be what what he needs to hear. Nevertheless, I'm sure it feels as foreign to him as it does to me to be having such an emotionally charged conversation. Maybe that means we're finally turning into adults. Our worries and responsibilities have grown ten fold since we'd left the Lagoon those years ago. There were others out there who depended on us.

Nephilim lightens up and changes the conversation, which I'm grateful for. I bob my head before settling my gaze on him again. "Nah, I'm in the Prairie now. I picked it up after Valentine and the rest of his herd moved on." I say, my tail drifting gently between my haunches. "Are you picking back up in the Bay? I heard through the grapevine you were running things over there for some time, but it's been quiet on Tinuvel for a while. You should come visit on Luthien sometime. Get out of that cold."

My gaze drops to the floor as I struggle with how to bring up Nova. I can't let it go. Mum would be furious.

"I heard you had a girl Vita Nova running with you for a while. Believe it or not, that's my sister. Well, half-sister." I blurt out, a friendly though weak grin barely holding steady across my lips. "She come back with you? "
