Valve twisted her head around to look down upon the gathering of horses in the valley of sand, near the oasis, assessing them in response to Nyazik’s inquiry. She saw Gabbar and then the two other mares he had mentioned keeping close to him. Snorting, she considered her next reply in conversation when another pair of horses moving across the dunes caught her eye—seemingly at the same time as her Akhal-Teke compatriot.

The black mare’s expression hardened as she realized these two stocky mutts were headed straight for them. “Fuckers,” she grumbled in agreement with Nyazik, and she pinned her ears tightly to her skull as the painted one made the mistake of getting too close to her. She lashed out at him with her teeth, aiming for his head or neck, hoping to land a very painful bite.

Gabbar had evidently been paying them more attention than she had initially suspected; it did not take long for him to rush toward them to aid in chasing off the raiders. It was a chaotic mess of hooves and teeth between the two mares and three stallions for a moment, and Valve was careful to stay as alert as possible to the actions of them all.

She is not surprised that these two would target Gabbar’s herd—especially since the buckskin had already met him once and apparently bore some sort of grudge against him. If Valve had been privy to that conversation, this intruding fool would have likely gotten an entirely different impression. Needless to say, Valve would not forget his face, or the painted stallion that accompanied him. They would be punished for their horrendous misjudgment, whether Valve had to do so herself or on the Dunes’ behalf.
