RUAIRIDH

The mare swung her rump away from him and, though it was more likely for her unborn child’s benefit than his, he was thankful – a kick from the back foot was the worst kind. Past the bulk of his seemingly endless forelock, he tipped his head up to get a better look at her. He could practically see the words about to leave her mouth…..and then a whinny sounded from the other direction.

Ruairidh was far less subtle in his actions than the what-he-considered-to-be-tall mare and swung his head pronouncedly to get a better look at the approaching mare. She was also taller than he is, but not as tall as the bay mare, and she had a svelte figure that he was not quite so confident he and his food baby could outrun. “Ha! No seen a sing-el soul ‘n now yin are comin’ oot in force” he laughed, not particularly directed at anyone.

He had to marvel at his good fortune - two pretty mares to look at and still not a stallion around to stomp on him for looking.

The chestnut, who seemed quite sweet from what little he’d observed spoke and then the bay informed her of their ‘visitor’ to the ridge – at least now he had a name for the place. He bounced on the spot, just to let the new mare know the bigger mare was talking about him. “If yun are thinkin’ am some kin'a uncouth whalp ‘ere ta cause a ruckus, a kin assure ye am no. Yin sea wis gist a wickit master” He tipped his nose in the direction of the ocean for emphasis.

The first mare went on to mention a name that sounded harsh and violent. Ruairidh snorted. “Vodnik….Soonds like some kin'a ailment.” he chuckled mostly to himself - and if Vodnik was anything like the harshness of his name, Ruairidh suspected he could be the cause of a very painful ailment indeed. Perhaps he’d have to start warning other stallions against visiting the ridge, lest they want to catch the Vodnik too. He grinned at the thought but didn’t let the mares in on the joke.

The bay mare's explanation of where he was, gave him no real clarity either “Atlantis aye? Well fook me, a thought tha' it hid sunk intae the ocean eons ago. Am no deed am I?” This time he laughed openly, knowing it must be a different Atlantis, but finding it hilarious all the same.
