My feathered black legs eat up a few more meters of Earth before they begin to slow.
I know I’m right.

She apologises and I come to a stop, but I do not turn around immediately, instead I force some of the adrenalin out of my body by way of a few sharp, forceful snorts of air. I have maimed mares for much less than the disrespect she showed me, and as I stand in my haze of anger and confusion I cannot pinpoint why exactly I did not stay and beat a lesson of respect into the hag. It was not her youth that kept her safe from me; age has never stopped me before, and I definitely did not find her attractive for the thing was not in heat. Perhaps it was her quest. I too had lost my mother at a young age, I spent far too long looking for her and I remember thinking that if someone could just help me…please.

Shaking my broad skull from side to side I turn and in a quickened trot I start back towards her.

Despite my uncharacteristic feelings of empathy, my black tipped ears still remain flattened as I come to a stop in front of the steely coloured mare. I snort again loudly, droplets of mucus flying from my nostrils as I stare her down. ”I could kill you, you know” I say, more for my benefit than for hers. ”I know of a palomino mare, fuck knows if it’s your mother though” my ears do not move and my tone is still course, but the hatred has subsided from my eyes. ”She was in the Lagoon last I saw her. I will take you there, but you do not speak to me like that again, and you damn well better address me as ‘Sir’ from here on out. Do I make myself clear?”
