His dreams were haunted by his father.

He woke in a cold sweat with someone else's scent in his nostrils. For a moment he could not remember where he was, and his eyes darted around the moonlit oasis to gather his bearings. Everything was as still and silent as it had been before. Then, movement - he turned his head at a flash of white and saw a mare lurking at the edge of the foliage, staring straight at him. Instinctively he half-reared and bunched his muscled hindquarters beneath him, preparing to flee, but then the vision spoke and became Oswin.

Koray flared his nostrils and tried to still the beating of his heart. "You again?" he grumbled, and crept several steps closer to the painted mare, looking down at her with exasperation on his tired face. "She's around. Why have you come back? I thought I gave you plenty of reason not to." She did not need to know that he'd limped for a week after their encounter.

Something she had said gave him pause, however. He had not known she and Vita were sisters - though now that he considered it, he could see a vague resemblance - for the last time he and Oswin had confronted each other, he had hardly given her any time to speak before setting on her with teeth and hooves. Did this change things? The cogs in his sleep-muddled brain were slow to turn.
