light me up like a bottle rocket

She doesn’t let herself get worked up, that will only cloud her judgment. The thunder is still some ways off, so she has time to figure out what to do. Trying to retrace her steps is not a good idea because as the storm blows closer, it will get even darker and her sight will be compromised completely. Her only real option is to stay put and wait it out, potentially creating the most terrifying time of her life.

She blinks and strains furiously, trying in vain to make her eyes work better so she can at least get herself into the most sheltered position possible. She huffs in frustration even as she rubs her scraped nose on her leg, trying to ease the stinging. She can’t tell if it’s bleeding – it hurts enough that it could be – and she will likely never know if the rain soaks her as she expects it to.

She sighs inaudibly as another rumble, a little louder, reaches her ears. At almost the same moment, she hears loud rustling from behind her. Heart still pounding, she whips her head around, nostrils flaring. She futilely tries to see who or what may be about to find her, knowing it would be pointless to attempt to flee.

She catches Talya’s scent, but the girl has traversed so much of these woods that Aurora can get a hint of it almost anywhere. She doesn’t want to get her hopes up and waits for a voice. When the filly finally speaks, the mare almost sags in relief. She won’t be alone during the storm and Talya will help her relax.

”Hello, Talya,” she greets casually enough. No need to display her weakness in front of her young friend. ”No, the sky hasn’t done anything,” she replies with a fond chuckle. Perhaps, she thinks suddenly, it would be best to play it off as a joke. ”I was walking along, minding my own business, when this tree popped up right in my path.” She widens her cloudy brown eyes for emphasis.

She cannot see Talya but decides to leave her head facing the direction that Talya’s voice had last come from. She doubts it’ll take the filly long to realize that Aurora’s eyes have stopped working again.
