kill the boy and let the man be born

DIAMANT

Diamant’s eyes drifted to the filly when she spoke, but when her words had registered on his brain, his gaze snapped back to Macabre with alarm, searching her face for the truth. When she confirmed the girl’s words, the stallion experienced a wave of numbness.

He was a father. But he was so young… he wasn’t ready. Or was he? What if this was exactly the kind of responsibility he needed in a time when he felt stagnant and lost?

His mind racing, his heart thumping, and his expression showing naked bewilderment, Diamant spent a few quiet moments processing this revelation while his eyes darted back and forth between mother and daughter. He could see it now, plain as day in front of his face: the girl’s eyes were his own.

“You are certain?” he finally murmured to Macabre, and immediately regretted it. What an ass he was to even question it. Clearing his throat to cover his discomfort, Diamant lowered his head closer to the filly’s level and looked deep into her face, extending his nose in an offer of physical contact if she chose to take it. There was truth there, hidden in her youthful features - he needed only be brave enough to recognize it.

He lifted his head, his throat suddenly tight with emotion, and regarded Macabre with solemn eyes. “Thank you for bringing her here... Macabre, if there’s anything you need, name it and it is yours. If you want to stay here, or if you need me back in the Peak... I’ll do whatever I can.”

An image of Mariael, her face still and hard like marble, flashed through his brain. Would she grant him leave now that there was a child in the mix?
