I am the razor in the hands of your heart;
And I am the razor in the hands of God.
It was, perhaps, the most forward Evaline had been in her display of affection for the black mare. For so long Evaline had showed restraint, fearful of what may change if Valve realized just how deeply the palomino mare cared for her. It was still a relatively new experience for Evaline herself. While she'd spent a great deal of time in Valve's company, and her feelings had never faltered, Evaline had only recently started coming to terms with the fact that she was in love with another mare. Ultimately Evaline decided that she was too old to care much about what others thought. And the long separation during Valve's stretch away only drew the fondness from her more brilliantly.
Of course, Evaline feared rejection. There was a chance that Valve would recoil from her, or worse, but it was too late to focus on that now.
The golden mare had daydreamed of fantasies where Valve was as affectionate in return. That Valve's heart swelled, too, at the sight of her. Evaline was too bitter and too realistic to ever think these dreams could cross over into existence. But they helped her pass the time while Valve was away.
The golden mare also knew better than to question Valve where she'd been. So instead, Evaline slowly, and rather reluctantly pulled herself away from her. Only after she'd playfully lipped at the dark mare's black mane, and hung in her usual close proximity to her. Her tail flicked idly over her haunches as she watched Valve's usual impenetrable expression in the darkness of night. Evaline decided she was content just having Valve here and now, no matter how fleeting that was. She thought briefly of Priya and the chaos in the Desert. She thought of Shamwari. But that could wait. It was information Valve was already aware of.
So instead she stood silently, with no intention of leaving Valve's side, until she was ready to move toward the oasis.
