This is no ordinary love

It was frustrating and bewildering to Vita Nova how hot and cold their interactions tended to be. One moment, Nova was wildly infatuated with Warsaw, ready to give herself over to him if only for just one night, or perhaps longer, but then he'd say something off the cuff or offer a more aggressive approach, and she would shy away. The first red flag was the way the tone of the conversation changed at the mention of his neighbor in the Bay. Her interest piqued when Warsaw revealed that he had once ruled the Bay too. But clearly he wasn't interested in reminiscing. Instead, he turned hostility toward her, demanding to know where her allegiance was. It was abrupt and off-putting. The sooty-colored mare didn't hesitate to show her displeasure with his attitude. "Excuse me? No." She snorted at him and her ears lay in a bed of grey mane at her poll. The answer to his question, however, was complicated. The Queen of the Bay was Nephilim's child. Nephilim was Nova's first and only love at this point in her life. But she wasn't about to tell him that.

"I have a brother who lives in the Bay." She said stiffly instead. "But I haven't seen him in some time. As far as I know, he's not in any position of power in their herd." The second this explanation slipped from her lips she regretted it. The last thing she ever wanted to do would be to drag Paradiso into some unwarranted drama. And give what little she knew about the handsome grey stallion thus far, she had no inclination of what Warsaw would do with this information. She was relieved then, when the conversation changed to something more flirtatious and light-hearted.

Nova could feel a sudden heat rising from her gut as she touched him. Her heart beat quicker in her chest as she watched him, reveling in the way he looked at her. She liked the way he looked at her. In certain moments, he made her feel like she was the only mare he ever wanted to look at in this way. It made her feel powerful. But then he had to go and ruin it by talking again.

Warsaw's quip about Petal soured her mood, almost completely, so it was easy to turn tail and run from him. She was happy, however, to see him follow in her wake. Her dull hooves took her down the hard and somewhat familiar path, through the trees and over boulders until a mountainous ridge grew more prominent in the foreground. Vita Nova slowed her pace from a three-beat canter to a two-beat trot, and made quick turns around one large rock and then another. Eventually she spied the dark opening to a cavern, a place in which she'd sheltered herself from the elements when she was pregnant here that one winter. Vita Nova cast one last longing glance back to Warsaw before tip-toeing inside.

Her chipped hooves echoed off the damp walls of the cave with every step she took. Her heart was beating so fast with anticipation and with lust. Since it was too dark to see, the mare's nostrils flared as she searched the humid air for Warsaw's scent, and she tested the air around her for the heat from his body. She'd lifted her tail to guide him to her. When she finally felt his presence, she whispered, "Do you still wish I was Petal?"
