Botanizing with Jim - photo added

Sep 04-05 I joined Muskoka’s pre-eminent field botanist, Jim Goltz for his semi-annual visit to the old stomping grounds and some serious botanizing. At gravel pits by Clearwater Lake we found several Black Willows, a first record for Muskoka discovered earlier by Sean Blaney. At Cowbell Lane, Severn River by the old brick restaurant, a large spreading patch of Japanese Coltsfoot, new for Muskoka. The leaves can be up to one metre wide—I know of only one other Ontario location. On the north shore of Jevins Lake we admired the only known Muskoka location of Tuckahoe (Peltandra virginica), here covering much of the shoreline. At Bala, most of the populations of the noxious Giant Hogweed have been herbicided but we did find one persistent growth behind the old railroad station. The highlight for me was an extensive patch of Shining Aster (Symphyotrichum firmum) opposite 1113 Greenwood Point Road, Walker’s Point, only mainland Muskoka location. This is a recently described lovely bluish-white aster with large dense flower heads. Also here we believe are basal leaves of Bur-chervil (Anthriscus sylvestris), new for Muskoka. This plant is invading Ontario. I need to check the flowers next June.
