Was I left behind?
Tell me, tell me I survived.

I listen with interest as the dark mare responds to my questions. She seems young, still filly-like in some ways. It seems strange for her to out on her own, and in a new, strange place. No wonder she seemed so on edge. I breathe a long, heavy sigh as I consider this. I nod when she confirms my suspicions and my smile widens in an attempt to be warm and friendly. "Well, welcome." I say, with the gentle flick of my red tail.

As our conversation shifts, I watch her face as it contorts in confusion. This is fairly common too -- most newcomers, who stumble upon this place after life lived on the mainland, find our ways of coming and going so foreign and strange. "You learn to gauge the currents, to know when it's safe and when it isn't," I explain. "I guess you're right, that there is always some risk no matter what." I crane my head to one side now, to peer back toward the coastline behind me. I can't see it from my vantage point, but I can still faintly smell the scent of the salt in the sea breeze. "But isn't there danger everywhere?" I counter, cocking my heavy head to one side as I focus my attention back on her. "Predators live here. Storms roll through. Some are worse than others. But they are all just as unforgiving as the sea."

The young mare admits that she isn't sure where she's from. My whiskered nostrils flare again as I try to search her scent, but nothing remotely familiar comes to mind. "That's OK." I say softly, hopefully in what she'll perceive in a comforting way. "So how did you end up here?"
