Eisenhower was not a commander, he was a manager. With his great big smile and willingness to accommodate the Brits on nearly everything, he somehow managed to keep Patton and Montgomery working somewhat together. But no one else could even have done that much. And he came close to being relieved for his affair with Summersby.
