Will--Your comment can only be construed to indicate you think we were supporting Assad. We have backed the SDF as a force seeking Assad's removal and have repeatedly said that any political solution in Syria must include Assad's relinquishing power.
In fact we did have a strategic and achievable objective, the annihilation of ISIS in Syria. Now, with our (Trump's) confession of inconsistency, they have gained a moral victory and will inspire fence sitters to join, furthermore we have reinforced our reputation as untrustworthy, leaving the Kurds to ISIS, Turkey, and Assad.
Ed is right on about General Mattis, and there are no candidates that can measure up to him. Replies:
