PERSEPHONE

The call split the peaceful silence of the Forest, save for the whistling of the winter winds through the trees. It was a voice that Persephone recognised instantly – she did not easily forget the sounds of her captors and enemies. Warsaw had made it clear, and quickly, that he was both of those things as far as the Forest herd was concerned.

Since Mariael had disappeared from the islands, Persephone’s alliances against the few troublesome inhabitants felt less reinforced than usual. It left her feeling somewhat uneasy.

She wound her way through the trees swiftly, and soon came to the edge of the territory and face to face with that same man she had fought with all that time ago. She approached him, her muscles taught beneath her skin as she was drawn up to her full height. She paused a few feet away, close enough so as not to appear intimidated, but far enough away to show that she didn’t trust or welcome him.

Persephone stared at him for a moment, her dark eyes trying to discern any inclination of Warsaw’s purpose in his expression. She let out a snort.

“What are you doing here?” her voice was cool, calmly controlled.
