Bring Me to Life~

She smelled him before anything. Instantly, her body went on high alert, her skin spasming like flies were attacking her as her tail swatted at her flanks. Snorting, the whites of her eyes rolled as she backed away from the pool of water and watched him from a distance. It was a stallion, her worst nightmare. It felt like the scars on her shoulders and neck were burning as she tossed her head, her ears pinned and her lips quivering, trying to warn him back but the fear in her eyes was tell tale that it was all a bluff.

One ear flicked as he started to speak, saying something....a name? She snorted again and pawed the ground, arching her neck as she backed up another step, hoping he'll change his mind and go the other way. But instead, he took another step and spoke again. It sounded like he thought she was someone else but she knew she'd never seen him before and the name was not one she recognized. She shook her head. "No...no, that's not me." She whispered the words but they sounded desperate, even to her own ears. There was a pleading in them, wishing he would just go away.

As he shook his head, she feared the worse, turning her shoulder to him and bracing as if for an attack. This shoulder had more scars on it because it was her defense move, the hairless patches visible even in the moonlight to show where teeth had once been. The stallion closed his eyes and when he opened them, she saw realization flash, but her body remained tense and waiting. Next thing she knew, he was apologizing. Her ears pinned again in uncertainty, distrust flashing in her eyes as she tossed her head again. When he took a few steps back, she felt a breath release in relief but she wouldn't relax, not until he was gone.

He told her to have a good night as he turned away and she felt her head lower a little in defeat, if only for the fact that he seemed to be leaving. She didn't know all of a sudden whether it was really what she wanted or not. When he left, she would be all alone. Was that really any more favorable? All of a sudden, she wasn't so sure. Either way, she shook her head. "I don't think I'll ever have a good one, again." She almost mumbled the words, speaking more to herself than anything as she glanced again at the clear water in the pool, taking in her reflection. Where a spry young mare should stand, full of life and hope, instead there was a terrified and wounded soul.
