Al, there have been several battery explosions in the past aboard diesel boats, usually attributed to defective ventilation. I know of non on nuclear submarines, but I’m no expert and many years out of touch. The excessive strain on the battery noted during the early ORSE reactor recovery drills led to a modification of procedures to avoid the high strains. De Grasse feels that SCORPON was rehearsing drills in anticipation of a forthcoming ORSE but was unaware of the modified procedures and exceeded the battery limits.
BTW I believe Tom Albee was Repair Officer in Rota at this time.
