Since the mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton, many voices have come out in support of re-imposing the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban--the most recent coming from Bill Clinton. (See below link).
As pointed out in the Clinton article, the number of mass shootings did go down significantly during the ten year period of the ban.
The below article makes an even stronger case for the effectivessnes of the 1994 ban. (https://www.huffpost.com/entry/did-the-assault-weapons-b_b_9740352).

The below article (https://fortune.com/2018/02/20/australia-gun-control-success/) indicates that subsequent to a similar ban in Australia---one that included a buyback provision to get rid of existing assault-type weapons---the number mass shootings has gone to zero.

The below article (https://www.npr.org/2019/04/10/711820023/new-zealand-passes-law-banning-most-semi-automatic-weapons) discusses a recently implemented Australia-type gun ban in New Zealand.

All of the above seems to me to make a strong case for re-imposing the 1994 assault weapons ban--this time with an Australian-type buyback provision.
It wouldn't be that far removed from the existing ban on the sale of machine guns.
